Help Your Neighbor Grants
This grant program, introduced in March 2009, has provided over $100,000 in grants to qualified local charitable organizations assisting many Jefferson County residents struggling to pay for basic needs like food, housing, utilities and prescription medication.
Grants will be given to local charities that show a proven capacity to determine eligibility to assure financial assistance gets to the neediest.
Currently, grant awards of up $1,000 are available.
Eligible organizations:
- Nonprofit 501(c)(3) agencies providing critical support to local families and senior citizens in meeting basic needs
- Demonstrate a substantial increase in demand for services during the past year
- Offer support services and programs for utility, prescription, food, housing and other basic need assistance
- Priority for efforts that meet emergency needs
- Priority will be given to those who demonstrate the ability to maximize grant dollars in terms of number of people served
- May reapply as long as funds are available and required reports have been submitted and approved
Evaluation:
- Potential impact on local residents
- Degree to which the organization has established processes to assess needs and the capacity to do so
Grants are to be used to provide basic necessities, not for:
- Operations
- Debt retirement
- Program creation
- Advocacy

A detailed accounting of funds one month after the grant is depleted, including: individuals helped, what was needed, how much it cost including receipts and a brief narrative describing the impact of the grant. Subsequent requests will not be considered until reporting requirements are met.
